Kylie Minogue

From Neighbour to Pop Diva

"She has a great voice. I love working with her because she has a terrific sense of humour, a fabulous personality and she knows how to really sell a song."
Pete Waterman, producer

By wearing Kylie’s name on her T-Shirt at the MTV Europe Music Awards, even Madonna knows that Kylie Minogue is quite a competitor for the title ‘Queen of pop’ and at 38, entertaining the world for over 14 years, she certainly deserves the title.

Kylie Minogue, who hails from Australia. During her early years Kylie was influenced by taking piano and jazz lesson’s. Early musical influences were "The Beatles", "The Rolling Stones" and "Abba". Even though Kylie was quite a shy child her mother had already decided will become a dancer.

It was when Kylie turned 11 that her debut part in Australian television show "The Sullivans" began an incredible rise to fame within the Australian television industry. Kylie always balanced her studies with her acting career and it was after she passed her school that Kylie decided she was going to act.

In February 1986, Kylie got the part of feisty girl next door mechanic Charlene Mitchell in the new soap, "Neighbours". A deluge of fanmail and rising viewing figures saw them extend the 12 week contract and "Charlene" with on and off screen love "Scott Robinson"(played by Jason Donovan) took the show to the number one ratings spot in Australia and the United Kingdom. A record 23.8 million witnessed there marriage and this for a daytime soap the mania caused by neighbours was also casuing kids to bunk off schools and take televisions with them just to keep up with the show. Looking back only Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and Guy Pearce(L.A.Confidential) have also found fame.

It was no surprise that Kylie went on to win 5 television awards including Most Popular Television Actress the same year. In 1987 Kylie performed with the cast for a charity function and an opportunity arose to sing a solo of Little Eva’s sixties smash "The Locomotion". The reception was crazy and Kylie was swept into the studio to record and release the song within days. The single was released and went to number one in Australia for 7 weeks during 1987. Kylie decided that this was a direction that was now calling her, so in 1988 when Kylie finished filming her last Neighbours scenes, she flew to England to meet with producers.

She then released I Should Be So Lucky both in Australia and Europe where I Should Be So Lucky became one of the most successful songs of 1988.
She released her No:1 debut album ‘Kylie’ (which is also the second most successful debut album from the youngest artist second only to Britney Spears) in 1988 which got her a string of hits around the world, even her only US hit single. She had another UK number one when she made a duet with then boyfriend Jason Donovan

In 1990, a new decade and a new look for Kylie who had now gotten over her split with Jason Donovan and had started a new love affair with Michael Hutchence (The lead singer of famous Australian group INXS). Kylie left her girl-next-door image and took on new glamour clothes and a more grown up look and attitude. Her album ‘Rhythm Of Love’ gave her more hits Kylie Minogue then went through a low period in 1992.

Kylie later joined a new record company, Deconstruction and released her 5th album ‘Kylie Minogue’ which gave her a successful UK number 2 with ballad Confide In Me. The songs to follow were unsuccessful even though Kylie, as Madonna had done changed her image frequently.

She released her favourite of her songs, Where The Wild Roses Grow (a duet with Nick Cave) in 1995 and a Australian no:1 came her way but she did not release anything until 1997 which saw her have the most obvious and severe of her image changes. She had help from Indian stars Manic Street Preaches to release the first single from her new album ‘Impossible Princess’ (Later changed to ‘Kylie Minogue’ due to the tragic death of Princess Diana which clashed with the release of ‘Impossible Princess’).

Kylie once again was in the limelight and in September 2001, she released a new single and undoubtedly one of the catchiest singles ever Can’ Get You Out Of My Head was number 1 in the top 10 everywhere else in Europe and Asia. Can’ Get You Out Of My head is from the album ‘Fever’.

The Diva launched her new album "Body Language" in a Paris in 2003. The album has been hailed by critics as a huge progression and sees her moving away from her usual catchy dance tunes. The album is a move in a new direction for Kylie and features collaborations with dance guru Curtis Mantronix, Ash Thomas (aka Baby Ash) and Mr Dan.

The next album «Ultimate Kylie» released on November, 2004. So «Queen of pop» created one more masterpiece for her fans!
